Have you ever heard of a city growing up around a mosque? Masjid Al Mubaroq has witnessed Jakarta’s transformation for nearly five centuries. It stands as a testament to the city’s rich history, nestled within the bustling landscape of South Jakarta on Jalan Jendral Gatot Subroto. Masjid Al Mubaroq isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, dating back to 1527. A time when Jakarta was still known as Jayakarta. It was established by Pangeran Adipati Awangga, also known as Pangeran Kuningan and Syekh Arkanuddin. He arrived with the Demak-Cirebon forces, led by Fatahillah, who wrestled Jayakarta from the Padjajaran Kingdom. Pangeran Kuningan led his people to the southern part of the newly conquered territory. He traveled via the Krukut River, navigating the dense, untamed wilderness that was then South Jakarta. He established his leadership in the area that would become Kampung Kuningan, centered around what we now know as Masjid Al Mubaroq. The mosque stands as a silent witness to his leadership. Pangeran Kuningan rests nearby, his tomb located about 200 meters north of Masjid Al Mubaroq, within the grounds of PT. Telkom. His followers are buried in the area behind the mosque. Masjid Al Mubaroq has seen its share of challenges. In the 1920s, the original structure collapsed. It was meticulously rebuilt using the existing foundation, preserving around 65% of its original form. Today, it stands proudly near the Satria Mandala Museum, a beacon of history and faith in the heart of the city. It’s a protected monument, recognized by local ordinances and designated as a historic mosque. It serves as a center for Islamic learning and a peaceful retreat for those who work in the surrounding area. Masjid Al Mubaroq’s story is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story of leadership, faith, and the enduring spirit of a community. A story woven into the very fabric of Jakarta. It’s a remarkable journey from a riverside settlement in a dense jungle to the vibrant metropolis we see today.
