Around 600 BC a fortified village stood on this very hilltop. That’s Marks Gate you see before you. Can you imagine its inhabitants? They wouldn’t have envisioned the estate we see today.
Marks Gate a name echoing centuries. It’s rooted in the medieval manor of Marks later Marks Hall. This manor belonged to the de Merk family way back in the 14th century. The manor house a magnificent twenty-bedroom moated structure. Sadly it was demolished in 1808.
The name Marks Gate itself referred to a gate into Hainault Forest. This gate marked the entrance near the manor. Over time other forest gates faded into history. Roselane Gate and Padnall Corner vanished. Marks Gate however endured becoming a focal point. It became a significant area in its own right.
The 1950s brought dramatic changes. The Dagenham council built a large housing estate. This transformed Marks Gate into the community we see today. Many houses remain in municipal ownership. The area unfortunately still faces high unemployment.
