Once a horse-racing ground, Turf City now whispers tales of a bygone era. This 140-hectare site once pulsed with the thundering hooves of racehorses. The Singapore Turf Club called this place home from 1933 to 1999. Imagine the excitement. Crowds roared as horses sprinted towards the finish line.

But times change. The Singapore Turf Club moved to Kranji. Turf City transformed into something new. It became a recreational haven. Families discovered a unique space.

Now, let’s wander through the memories of Turf City. The clock tower still stands. Its hands are frozen. They overlook what was once a vibrant hub. Faded signs and rusty poles hint at the past. Weeds now grow where horses once grazed.

Turf City became a melting pot of activities. An axe-throwing range popped up. A polo-riding academy took root. A go-karting arena revved to life. Antique stores appeared selling wooden furniture. Lush greenery surrounded everything. This blend gave Turf City its unique charm.

Many remember meals at Turf City’s seafood restaurants. Others recall shopping at the old Giant hypermarket. It was a place to escape the city.

The community loved Turf City’s open spaces. Football pitches thrived. Players shouted and cheered without worry. Zinc and wood sheds provided rest between games. A kampung spirit filled the air.

Premier Pitch even planted banana and coconut trees. Workers would pluck coconuts. Friendships blossomed among customers and staff. Turf City fostered a special connection.

Rosebrook Developmental Centre found a home here. They helped children with special needs. Paisano Polo Academy offered horse riding lessons. The outdoor environment was perfect. Children explored and discovered. Turf City became a place of healing.

Alan Wong owned an antique store. He watched horses from the Bukit Timah Saddle Club trot by. Chickens roamed freely. It was a rustic scene hard to find elsewhere.

But progress marches on. The Cross Island line’s new Turf City MRT station is under construction. Change arrived. Redevelopment plans loomed since 1998. Tenants knew their time was limited. The final lease extension expired in December 2023.

Relocating was a struggle for many Turf City businesses. Large spaces were hard to find. Rental costs elsewhere were too high. Some businesses closed down for good. The sense of community was irreplaceable.

Turf City offered something special. It was a place where communities thrived organically. It had life, spirit, and liveliness. The memories of Turf City will linger. The cheers of football teams will echo. The clatter of horses’ hooves will resonate. Future generations will hear stories of this rustic charm. Though Turf City is gone, its legacy remains.
