Hall Mead School

From its humble beginnings as a secondary modern, Hall Mead School has blossomed into an ‘Outstanding’ academy. Hall Mead School first opened its doors in 1960. Initially, it served students who didn’t qualify for grammar school. The community rallied together, raising funds for a swimming pool, a testament to their dedication to the school’s success. Ironically, the current Hall Mead School no longer has a pool. The school became a comprehensive school and then, in 2011, transitioned to an academy. Hall Mead School earned a prestigious “Leading Edge Specialist Academy” designation in Technology and Languages. It also leads a teacher training consortium. In 2013, Ofsted awarded Hall Mead School an “Outstanding” rating. This made it the only school in Havering to achieve such high marks. A decade later, in 2023, Hall Mead School again received an “Outstanding” rating across all categories. The original 1960s building was no longer suitable for modern education. It suffered from cramped corridors, extreme temperatures, and dysfunctional windows. The limited hall space served as a dining room, drama space, and everything in between. Recognizing the need for change, the Department of Education granted funding for a new building in 2018. The new building, completed in 2021, boasts modern design and innovative learning spaces. Hall Mead School boasts some impressive alumni. Frankie Sandford, from S Club 8 and The Saturdays, graced its halls. Footballer Harlee Dean, actress Carly Hillman, Britain’s Got Talent finalist James Smith, Paralympian Amy Marren, model Paul Sculfor, DJ Phil Mison, footballer Max Watters, and musician Matt Cox all call Hall Mead School their alma mater. Located in Upminster, near Cranham, Hall Mead School continues to shape young minds and inspire future generations.
