“Rousseau, the champion of equality and nature, stands before you.” The Jean-Jacques Rousseau Bust in Paris, right here, is the work of the renowned sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, known for his realistic and often idealized portraits. He even managed to portray Rousseau despite the philosopher’s refusal to sit for a portrait. The famous philosopher died peacefully in 1778. But his legacy lived on. After his death, the Marquis de Girardin, who owned the estate where Rousseau died, immediately sent word to Houdon to make a death mask of the man. Houdon, a man of great respect and admiration for Rousseau, took it upon himself to capture the philosopher’s likeness, utilizing the death mask as a reference. Houdon’s bust is considered one of the most accurate portrayals of Rousseau, capturing the intense gaze of a man who dedicated his life to ideas that continue to inspire and debate us today.
