The name Liberty Baptist Church rings out. It’s not as grand as the Cathedral, nor as modern as the megachurch down the street. It’s a testament to enduring faith, a heart of the community since the early 1960s. It’s a story of a couple, Rev. and Mrs. Clyde Boyd, who felt called to rekindle their faith in their hometown of Lewisville. The Boyds had spread their message across the state, even as far as Arkansas and Wichita Falls. They felt a pull to return to their roots. However, they found the place they had started a church in 1952, called Central Baptist Church, had been absorbed by the Denton Baptist Temple. They sensed a yearning for a new church on the west side of the city. After a long journey, they leased the old Presbyterian Church building. The Boyds held a two-week revival in this sanctuary. One Sunday, they organized what would become their beloved Liberty Baptist Church. This was a time of rapid growth for the city of Lewisville. The Boyds found their church growing too. They purchased a property on Manco Road, using support from the community. This humble building was the beginning of a grand legacy. After 34 years of leading, the Boyd’s stepped aside, handing the mantle to several different pastors. Today, the church continues to grow under the leadership of Pastor Stephen Phillips. This building stands as a tribute to faith, family, and the indomitable spirit of the Boyds.
