Why did the Quran survive a devastating fire? We’re standing before the Imam Reza Mosque in New Lynn, Auckland. In November 2024, this place of worship was tragically targeted in an alleged arson attack. A fire, deliberately lit under the cover of darkness, smouldered for eight hours, gutting the mosque’s interior. The Imam Reza Islamic Mosque shared photos revealing the extent of the damage. Melted chairs, scorched carpets, and hanging ceiling panels. Yet, amidst the destruction, an undamaged Quran was found. This holy book, untouched by the flames, became a symbol of resilience and faith for the community. The mosque leaders quickly established a Givealittle page to raise funds for restoration. The money was earmarked for repairing the structural damage, replacing essential resources, and enhancing security. The outpouring of support from the community and beyond was a testament to the mosque’s importance. While the physical structure suffered, the spirit of the Imam Reza Mosque remained unbroken. The mosque chairman emphasized that their true foundation wasn’t the building itself, but their faith, love, patience, and unity. These, he said, are the stones no fire can burn.
