A flicker of resilience. That’s the story of the Evangelical Reformed Church, a church that refused to give up, even when fate seemed determined to test its foundations. Here on Lauriston Road, we stand on hallowed ground, a place that once echoed with hymns and prayers, a place that bore witness to a community’s unwavering faith. The Evangelical Reformed Church, originally established in London in 1697, was a sanctuary for Protestant refugees fleeing religious persecution in the Palatinate. Granted refuge by William III, they first held services in the chapel of the Savoy Palace. Imagine the solace they found within those walls, a haven from the storms that had driven them from their homes. Their journey was marked by resilience. The church moved from Duchy Lane in Savoy to Hooper Square in Leman Street, Whitechapel. Each move represented a new beginning, a testament to their enduring spirit. But their journey was also marked by adversity. The church in Duchy Lane was demolished in 1816 to make way for Waterloo Bridge. The Hooper Square church met a similar fate, sacrificed for railway expansion. Undeterred, they rebuilt, each time stronger and more determined. Here on Goulston Street, the Evangelical Reformed Church found its newest home in 1886. It stood as a beacon of hope until 1941 when it was tragically destroyed by bombing. The church, like the congregation it served, faced trials and tribulations. But it also embodied a spirit of perseverance, a refusal to be extinguished. Though the physical structure may be gone, the spirit of the Evangelical Reformed Church lives on, a testament to the enduring power of faith.
