Saint Josephs Catholic Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a cornerstone of the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Founded in 1887 it served as the first Polish parish in this area. Its patron saint proved fitting. The church provided solace and community to generations of immigrant workers near the Union Stockyards.
The church’s story is one of growth and resilience. The Polish population in the Back of the Yards exploded in the early 20th century. This led to the creation of two more Polish parishes from St Joseph’s. These were St John of God in 1906 and Sacred Heart in 1910. Many of St Joseph’s early parishioners were Gorals. They were Polish Highlanders from the Carpathian Mountains.
The current church building is a stunning example of Polish Cathedral style. Designed by Joseph Molitor it opened in 1914. It boasts a seating capacity of 1200. It’s one of three monumental religious structures that dominate the neighborhood skyline. The impressive Baroque church underwent significant redecoration in the early 1950s. This was thanks to the artistry of John A Mallin.
St Joseph’s faced challenges. The closing of the Union Stockyards in the 1970s led some Polish families to leave. The parish even survived archdiocesan budget cuts in 1990. Despite these setbacks St Joseph’s continued to thrive. It adapted to serve a multicultural community. Today masses are held in Polish English and Spanish. This reflects the diverse congregation.
In 2021 Saint Josephs merged with nearby parishes. This was part of the archdiocesan Renew My Church initiative. This merging didn’t diminish its importance. It’s still a vital hub for spiritual and community life. A place that has touched countless lives. A building that stands tall. A beacon of hope resilience and faith.
