Greenhill. A name that echoes the whispers of centuries past. Here in Barnet, Greenhill isn’t just a locality. It’s a living testament to London’s ever-evolving story. We stand on land once part of a grand estate called Pricklers. Imagine the medieval Prittle family, whose name gave the estate its original moniker. By the 16th century, the name shifted to Greenhill, a moniker that has endured through the ages. In the 19th century, the Greenhill estate was divided. Thomas Wyatt built Willenhall on its southern portion. Sadly, Willenhall was later demolished around 1900. The heart of the estate, however, persevered. The ornamental lake before us is a relic of that bygone era, a shimmering mirror reflecting centuries of change. Greenhill, once a sprawling private domain, faced the pressures of development in 1926. Houses began to spring up, encroaching upon the historic landscape. But thanks to the foresight of East Barnet Council, a vital piece of Greenhill was saved. That July, the council purchased the land that now forms Greenhill Gardens for £20,000. This tranquil oasis, with its mature trees and the serene lake at its heart, offers a welcome respite from the bustling city beyond. As you stroll along the perimeter walk, imagine the grand estate that once stood here. The eastern edge, now bordered by gardens, hints at the relentless march of time and the changing face of London. Greenhill Gardens, a small but significant survivor, stands as a testament to the enduring power of the past.
