“A duel of words,” I begin, a mischievous glint in my eye, “fought right here at Place Edmond Rostand. Not with swords, but with wit as sharp as any blade.” We stand at the Place Edmond Rostand, a small but significant square in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. It’s where the Boulevard Saint-Michel meets the Rue de Médicis, a stone’s throw from the Luxembourg Gardens. Place Edmond Rostand honors the French playwright Edmond Rostand, the brilliant mind behind “Cyrano de Bergerac”. Rostand, born in 1868, was a poet and dramatist associated with the neo-romanticism movement. His most famous work, “Cyrano de Bergerac”, premiered in 1897 and quickly became a sensation. It tells the story of a nobleman with a prominent nose, renowned for his swordsmanship and his way with words. The play is full of witty banter, passionate declarations of love, and a touch of melancholy. Right here at Place Edmond Rostand, you can almost feel the echoes of Cyrano’s eloquent verses. This square, once part of Rue de Médicis, was renamed in 1924 to commemorate the playwright. In the center of the square is the Fontaine du Bassin Soufflot, a beautiful fountain sculpted by Gustave Crauk in 1862. It’s a fitting tribute to Rostand, a man who celebrated beauty and romance in his works. The fountain, with its nymph and triton, adds a touch of whimsy to the square, a reminder of the magic that Rostand brought to the stage. The Place Edmond Rostand is more than just a square. It’s a tribute to a literary giant, a place where the spirit of romance and wit still lingers. So, next time you’re strolling through Paris, take a moment to visit Place Edmond Rostand. Imagine Cyrano himself, standing here, ready to defend his honor with a flourish of his cape and a shower of poetic brilliance.
