Standing before the Busto do Padre João Musch one might wonder about the man behind the monument. Padre João Musch was born in Döত্তel, Germany in 1880. He came to Brazil as a seminarian in 1919.

Padre João Musch first served in Florianópolis in 1920. Later, in 1926, he moved to Antônio Carlos. This area had a large German population. He faced disagreements there because he restricted dances. After some residents complained, he moved to Barra do Piraí in Rio de Janeiro in 1927.

The diocese of Barra do Piraí was vast. It included southern Fluminense and the Green Coast. Padre João found many ruined churches there. He rebuilt the Parish of Santo Antônio de Jacutinga. It is now in the Prata neighborhood of Nova Iguaçu.

Padre João Musch wanted sisters to help spread the word of God. He also wanted religious education. He founded a parochial school in Nova Iguaçu. In 1935, the first missionaries arrived. They started a small school. It offered primary education. By 1936, the school offered a teaching course. In 1938, it became Ginásio Santo Antônio.

In 1953, the school began admitting boys. This led to expansion. It became the Instituto de Educação Santo Antônio IESA. Padre João Musch died in 1965. He was 85 years old.

Padre João’s life wasn’t without conflict. In Antônio Carlos, his restrictions on dances caused friction. Some wanted him removed. Later, a dispute arose over dances. It led to his transfer from São Pedro Alcântara.

Despite challenges, Padre João Musch dedicated himself to his work. He rebuilt churches. He established schools. He cared for his parishioners.

Even his religious opponent Leopoldo Machado recognized the amazing work of Padre João Musch. Machado noted that Padre João found all the churches in ruins. The padre divided his time between sermons, sacraments and bricklaying. He began restoring all the temples at once. This giant task was never finished within Padre João’s lifetime.

Padre João also founded a parochial school. This school later became the Instituto de Educação Santo Antônio IESA.

The city of Nova Iguaçu honors Padre João Musch. A viaduct bears his name. There are also streets and a school named after him. His legacy lives on. He is remembered as the Apostle of the Fluminense Lowlands.

Padre João Musch left behind a legacy of faith and service. He is still remembered today. His work continues to impact the community. The Busto do Padre João Musch reminds us of his dedication. It inspires us to serve others.
