“Behold, Holy Family Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith”. The story of Holy Family begins long before its physical structure. It started with a vision and the dedication of a small Catholic community.
Before the 1920s Catholics in the Park had to travel to Hopkins for worship. They walked along railroad tracks to attend services. Recognizing this hardship, Fathers Hovorka and Nolan began organizing a new Catholic church in St. Louis Park in 1924.
Holy Family was officially established in 1926. It became the first Catholic Church in St. Louis Park. For years, Holy Family Parish served the entire village until Most Holy Trinity was formed in 1942.
The first church building was a frame structure. It was built at a cost of $9,000. Twenty-five families bore the cost. They even used horses and hand scoops to dig the basement. This shows their immense dedication. The village bought that building in 1950 for use as a community center.
In 1951 a new church-school combination was built. It cost $369,000. The first mass was held on June 25, 1951. The building was dedicated and blessed on October 15, 1951.
A new English Gothic building was constructed in 1961. It was made of Kasota limestone and cost $400,000. The debt on the church was retired in December 1982. Construction started in October 1984 to complete the basement. A kitchen and dining facility were completed in the spring of 1985. Meeting rooms and a bride’s room were also added.
The final version of Holy Family Catholic Church is a mix of various influences. It gives an impression of authenticity. It uses a variety of English styles commonly found in great medieval churches in England.
These styles include the Gothic Revival style, Tudor-derived stylistic patterns. There is also the modern Arts and Crafts influence. The design shows the influence of Pugin. He was an English architect who helped pioneer the Gothic Revival style in the nineteenth century.
Despite budgetary constraints, the parishioners of Holy Family built something remarkable. It is a unique and lasting structure. The exterior resembles a fort. It reminds the faithful of the Church keeping vigil. The towers bring to mind the towers of a city gate. It offers consolation to all who enter.
Although Holy Family parish was established in 1926, the church wasn’t built until 1960. For ten years, the church was located in the school. The total cost of the new church was $400,000. It was finally paid off in 1982. The basement was completed in 1984.
