In 1990, a new giant graced Chicago’s skyline: Two Prudential Plaza. This isn’t just another skyscraper. Two Prudential Plaza stands tall at 995 feet, making it the sixth-tallest building in Chicago and the seventeenth-tallest in the US. Imagine working on the 64th floor, looking out at the bustling city below. Two Prudential Plaza wasn’t just built for height though. The architects, Loebl Schlossman & Hackl, led by Stephen T. Wright, crafted a unique design. The building boasts stacked chevron setbacks on its north and south faces, a rotated pyramidal peak, and an 80-foot spire. It’s a testament to innovative architecture, even earning the Best Structure Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois in 1995. For a time, Two Prudential Plaza held the title of the world’s tallest reinforced concrete building. A marvel of engineering, it stands connected to its sister building, One Prudential Plaza. Interestingly, without its spire, Two Prudential Plaza is only slightly taller than One Prudential Plaza’s pinnacle. Two Prudential Plaza isn’t just about offices and impressive views. It also houses the Consulate General of Canada, marked by the Canadian flag flying proudly alongside the American flag in the Lake Street plaza. And for those who enjoy a bit of movie trivia, Two Prudential Plaza was featured in the 1994 film “Richie Rich” as Rich Industries Inc. Two Prudential Plaza represents both architectural innovation and a significant piece of Chicago’s history.
