Masjid Sa’adatuddarain

Have you ever heard a mosque called “two happinesses”? Masjid Sa’adatuddarain in Pasar Minggu, Jakarta Selatan, translates to just that. It promises happiness in this world and the next. This beautiful mosque isn’t far from Universitas Nasional and just a short trip from Pasar Minggu Station. The architecture is a captivating blend of green and gold. It’s a nod to Ottoman Turkish design, with its prominent dome and flanking minarets. Ornate GRC work edges the roof, adding to its charm. Built in 2009, Masjid Sa’adatuddarain sits on a 1600 square meter plot of land. It shares the space with an early childhood education center. The main prayer hall is on the second floor. The ground floor houses multipurpose rooms, offices, restrooms, and ablution facilities. Twenty-three steps lead you to an intricately carved teak door, adorned with gold geometric patterns. Inside, the prayer hall is a unique pentagon shape, dictated by the direction of the qibla. This space, along with an adjacent multipurpose room, can accommodate 800 worshippers. With additional tented areas in the parking lot, capacity expands to 1000. The mihrab, a niche in the wall indicating the direction of prayer, dominates the altar. It’s framed by vibrant green and yellow GRC starburst patterns. A simple wooden mimbar, with the name of Allah carved on its front, sits within the mihrab. Calligraphy of the kalimat Tauhid, the Islamic declaration of faith, adorns the angled wall behind the mihrab. Flanking the mihrab are antique clocks nestled in smaller niches. Above, more calligraphy showcases the names of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad. A breathtaking sky-blue ceiling, complete with painted clouds, fills the dome’s basin. Light filters through 24 frosted glass windows etched with the name of Allah. The Asma’ul Husna, the 99 names of God, grace the spaces between. A five-tiered crystal chandelier, shaped like candles and holding 60 lights, hangs from the center. Outside, stained-glass windows in hues of green, white, yellow, and blue depict Allah and the Prophet Muhammad. The floors are simple white ceramic tiles. Modern amenities, like air conditioning and fans, ensure comfort while respecting Covid-19 protocols by maximizing airflow.
