United Church of Rogers Park

The imposing brick structure before you, topped with a grand dome, has been the heart of Rogers Park for over a century. This is the United Church of Rogers Park, a testament to the community’s resilience and faith, standing tall at the corner of Morse and Ashland Avenues. Originally a Congregational Church, its cornerstone was laid in 1905, but a fire destroyed the building in 1925. The congregation’s unwavering spirit rose even higher than the flames. They rebuilt their church, bigger and stronger, by 1927. It wasn’t until 1969 that the church was struck by another devastating event: a fire once again ravaged the building. This time, the flames led to a unique and powerful union, merging the Methodist congregation with the Congregationalists, who had offered them temporary shelter after the fire. This partnership marked a new era for the church, aptly named the United Church of Rogers Park, a symbol of the community’s commitment to acceptance and unity. The church has been a beacon of hope in the neighborhood, hosting various community programs and organizations, like the Rogers Park Day Care Center and the Rogers Park Tenants Association, making it an essential part of the Rogers Park community. It’s a place where people gather, find support, and embrace their faith, proving that even amidst challenges, the strength of a community can be found in the heart of its church.
