Doesn’t the simple design of the Sandringham Cenotaph speak volumes? It stands here in The Crescent, Beach Road. This memorial commemorates those who lost their lives in conflicts involving Australia. The Sandringham Cenotaph was originally built to remember the fallen of World War One.

Let’s go back to 1933. The mayor of Sandringham, Cr A.J. Steele, called a public meeting. It was held in the local town hall on November 13. The aim was to raise funds for a cenotaph. This would honor the soldiers who died in the war. An earlier wooden obelisk stood near the Soldiers Memorial Hall. But it wasn’t impressive and had deteriorated. The citizens wanted a permanent Sandringham Cenotaph to immortalize their heroic sons. There was discussion about the location. The Returned Soldiers League suggested a spot opposite Sandringham railway station.

Fast forward to 1937. The unveiling of Sandringham’s new Cenotaph was set for Anzac Day at 10 a.m. The mayor, Cr. J. Barnes, conducted the ceremony. Major-General C.H. Brand gave an address. Bands from the 46th Battalion and the Australian Garrison Artillery played music. The Sandringham Cenotaph occupied a central site in The Crescent, Beach Road. Its design was simple and dignified.

The Sandringham Cenotaph expanded its purpose over time. It now also remembers those who served in World War Two.

Later, a plaque was added. Councillor L. Y. Falloon, JP, unveiled it on April 12, 1992. The Hampton RSL Sub-Branch requested it. This plaque commemorates those who died during later conflicts. These include the Malayan Emergency, the Malaysian Confrontation, Korea, and South Vietnam.

Take a moment to appreciate this Sandringham Cenotaph. It is more than just stone. It represents sacrifice and remembrance. It links generations of Australians who served their country. The Sandringham Cenotaph stands as a reminder of their courage.
