Could the stones of Hacı Alaaddin Camii whisper tales of Ankara’s past? This mosque stands as a testament to centuries of history. It blends Seljuk heritage with echoes of Ottoman influence.

The Hacı Alaaddin Camii is Ankara’s oldest mosque. Its story begins in the 12th century. Muhyiddin Mesud, a Seljuk ruler, ordered its construction. He intended it to stand near his palace, inside the fortress.

Originally, the mosque was known simply as the Alaeddin Camii. This name honors Alaeddin Keykubad II. He oversaw crucial renovations. Later, some called it Muradiye Camii. This was during Sultan Murat II’s reign. Yet the name Alaeddin stuck in the hearts of the people.

Imagine Muhyiddin Mesud surveying his city. He envisions a house of worship rising alongside his palace. This mosque served both the royal court and the common people. It became a spiritual anchor for Ankara.

The Hacı Alaaddin Camii has seen many changes. It reflects the shifting powers that have shaped Ankara. The mosque’s minbar offers a glimpse into its past. It dates back to 1197. The minbar showcases the craftsmanship of the Seljuk period. It uses a technique called fake Kundekari. No nails were used.

Look closely at the mosque’s northern facade. This section features a unique design. It incorporates a “last congregation place” and a women’s gallery above. This design choice was innovative for its time. It later inspired other mosques in Anatolia.

Over the centuries, the Hacı Alaaddin Camii has endured sieges and conflicts. It faced destruction and restoration. Alaeddin Keykubad renovated the mosque after a period of turmoil. This helped cement its association with his name.

Notice the inscriptions that adorn the mosque’s walls. These inscriptions tell the stories of its renovations. They speak of Sultan Orhan’s governor Sulu Pasha. They tell of Şerif Sünbül Hatun during Murat II’s time. Sultan Abdülhamid II also contributed to its upkeep. Each era left its mark on the structure.

The minaret stands separate from the mosque. It rests on a stone base. It is believed that the minaret was constructed during the renovations of 1433. Its cylindrical body and single balcony add to the mosque’s character.

Consider the fountain near the mosque’s northwest corner. It once provided water for worshippers to perform ablutions. The fountain also had a sebil, or drinking station. This shows the mosque’s commitment to serving the community.

Today, the Hacı Alaaddin Camii stands as a symbol of Ankara’s resilience. It represents the blend of cultures and eras that have shaped the city. Its stones echo with the prayers of generations past. It is a testament to faith and perseverance.
