Let’s step back in time. The first public baths on this site appeared in 1850. These were built by the Vestry of St. James. Imagine a place with first and second-class baths. Think of washing compartments and drying chambers. It even had ironing compartments. Two large plunge baths completed the picture.
Fast forward to the late 1920s. Construction began on the building we see today. It opened in 1931 as The Westminster Public Baths. Public funds made it possible for the health of locals. The main swimming pool sparkled with white Sicilian marble. Swedish green marble adorned the walls. Walter Gilbert designed a bronze fountain. It featured a merchild playing with dolphins.
There was a second, smaller pool. It measured 70 ft x 30 ft. A barrel-vaulted roof covered it. The complex included a child’s welfare center in the early years. A public laundry and washing facilities were also available.
Marshall Street Baths closed for refurbishment in 1997. It reopened in July 2010. It’s now a modern leisure center. Today, Everyone Active runs Marshall Street Leisure Centre.
The renovated pool still boasts its original marble floor. The barrel-vaulted ceiling remains a stunning feature. The building is Grade II listed because of its architecture.
