Gazing at the Pedra da Onça, can you sense the whispers of ancient stories clinging to the salty air? This unassuming monument, perched on the edge of Praia da Guanabara in Rio de Janeiro’s Ilha do Governador, holds a tale as captivating as the view it overlooks. Pedra da Onça, “Jaguar Rock,” isn’t just a picturesque spot. It’s a tribute to a forgotten legend, a poignant echo of the island’s rich past. The statue atop the rock, a large spotted feline gazing out to sea, was erected in 1937 by a group of locals. It’s a maracajá, a type of wild cat once common on the island, though often mistaken for a jaguar due to its spots. The first statue, sculpted by João Zaco Paraná, was based on a maracajá specimen from the National Museum. Time and vandalism took their toll, leading to its replacement in 1965 and several renovations since. The Pedra da Onça isn’t just about a statue. It’s about the legend it embodies. The story speaks of a Temiminó native girl and her beloved maracajá. Each day, they would visit the rock. The girl would swim, her faithful companion watching from above. One day, she entered the water and never returned. The maracajá remained, perched on the rock, waiting. Days turned into nights, hope dwindling with each passing tide. Eventually, it perished from grief and starvation. This tragic tale, passed down through generations, explains the monument’s existence. Other versions of the story exist. Some say the girl was fishing with her father, others that she awaited her husband’s return. Regardless of the version, the maracajá’s unwavering loyalty remains constant. It became a symbol, a “totem,” of love, devotion, and protection for the islanders. So, as you stand before the Pedra da Onça, remember it is more than just a statue. It’s a poignant reminder of a lost past, a symbol of unwavering loyalty, and a testament to the enduring power of local legends. It is a piece of Ilha do Governador’s heart, forever gazing towards the sea.
