Did a statue ever run for president? In Manila, at the Fernando Poe Jr. Statue, that question takes on a whole new meaning. Fernando Poe Jr., affectionately known as FPJ or “Da King,” wasn’t just a beloved Filipino actor, director, and producer. He was a cultural icon who captivated audiences with his portrayal of champions for the poor and oppressed. His films, numbering close to 300, cemented his legendary status in Philippine cinema. Right here, at this very spot, we celebrate the man who embodied the hopes and dreams of countless Filipinos. The Fernando Poe Jr. Statue, a life-size bronze figure, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. It was unveiled on December 14, 2012, eight years after his passing, a poignant reminder of his impact on Filipino culture. The statue captures FPJ with his hands casually in his pockets, a familiar pose that resonates with his fans. Inscribed on the statue are the words, “Ang tunay na Pangulo sa puso ng nakararaming Pilipino,” which translates to “The true President in the hearts of many Filipinos.” This inscription alludes to his 2004 presidential bid. He narrowly lost the election, but his candidacy underscored his profound connection with the people. FPJ’s career spanned decades, from his debut as a stuntman at just 14 to starring in iconic films like “Ang Panday” and “Aguila.” He even directed and produced many of his films, using pseudonyms like Ronwaldo Reyes and D’Lanor. His films resonated with the masses. They depicted stories of everyday struggles, resilience, and hope. He won numerous awards, including five FAMAS Awards for Best Actor, solidifying his place in the FAMAS Hall of Fame. Beyond his artistic achievements, FPJ was a man of the people. He testified against criminal gangs extorting the film industry. He was also posthumously declared a National Artist of the Philippines in 2006. Here, at the Fernando Poe Jr. Statue, we remember the king. He was more than just a movie star; he was a symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Filipino people.
