This church, founded by German Lutheran immigrants in 1872, has been a steadfast presence in this neighborhood. It has witnessed the changing tides of time, from horse-drawn carriages to bustling city life. Interestingly, the congregation actually started with services held in homes until they acquired a former boys’ school, the Singer building. This building was moved to this very spot, marking the beginning of Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church’s permanent home.
Tragedy struck in 1918 when a fire destroyed much of the original structure. However, fueled by their faith and community spirit, the congregation rebuilt, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church’s dedication went beyond religious services. They ran a Lutheran elementary school until 1966, nurturing young minds. And in 1972, they expanded their facilities, adding a multi-purpose building that solidified their role as a community hub.
Today, Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church continues to be a beacon of faith and service. The echoes of its past linger in its architecture and in the hearts of its community, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the importance of togetherness.
