Billanook College

Billanook College, nestled amongst sweeping green lawns and natural bushland, has a story as rich as its grounds. Founded in 1980 by a group of dedicated parents, the college opened its doors in the Parish Hall of St. Andrew’s Church in Lilydale. The name “Billanook,” meaning “Lyrebird” in the local Wurundjeri language, was chosen to honour the area’s indigenous heritage. Despite humble beginnings, Billanook has blossomed into a thriving educational hub, serving the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne with its Early Learning, Primary, and Secondary programs. The college’s motto, “Growing and Caring”, reflects its commitment to providing a nurturing environment where students can flourish. Billanook College stands out for its innovative approach to learning, boasting a unique “Mastery, Discovery, and Journey” framework for middle school students. This framework empowers students to explore their academic passions within the traditional “Mastery” subjects, while also nurturing their individual talents and passions through “Discovery” projects that embrace self-directed learning and life skills. The “Journey” aspect encompasses a diverse array of experiences, including camps and tours, designed to broaden perspectives. As you wander through the expansive grounds, you’ll find two full-sized ovals, one half-sized oval, a massive gym, basketball courts, and a volleyball court. Billanook College has even established its own working vineyard and Viticulture Skills Centre, producing its first vintage in 2004. Today, Billanook College stands as a testament to a community’s shared dream, a space where young minds can explore, grow, and care for one another.
