“A plague chapel?” whispered a woman, clutching her rosary beads tighter as she approached Szent Rozália-kápolna. Szent Rozália-kápolna stands as a testament to resilience and faith. It has witnessed centuries of Budapest’s history. The chapel’s story begins long ago, with a small cemetery chapel built in the 11th century. The surrounding area served as a burial ground for the people of Pest. In the wake of the devastating 1710 plague, the city vowed to erect a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch, a protector against pestilence. Szent Rozália-kápolna, then known as Szent Rókus-kápolna, was consecrated on September 4, 1711. It became the first chapel outside Pest’s city walls. The plague returned in 1739. The city council, recognizing the need for a dedicated space to care for the sick, commissioned a plague hospital. The hospital was built near Szent Rókus-kápolna, expanding the chapel as well. The chapel’s facade and bell tower, as we see them today, were completed in 1765. A hermit named András lived in a small shack near the chapel’s sanctuary. He was the last hermit of Pest and tended to Szent Rókus-kápolna. He died in 1806 and was laid to rest in the Servite crypt. Szent Rókus-kápolna has endured many trials. During the Siege of Budapest in 1945, bombs severely damaged the chapel. The baroque vaults collapsed. During the reconstruction, a remarkable discovery was made. The sanctuary’s foundation revealed a clover-leaf shaped structure, a cella trichora. This early Christian prayer space is now accessible as a crypt, designed by Kálmán Lux. The chapel suffered again during the 1956 uprising. Its tower and facade were extensively damaged and required reconstruction. Callmeyer Ferenc oversaw the restoration, and the missing facade statues were replaced. The current statues depict various Hungarian saints, including Saint Roch at the top, flanked by Saint Stephen in the center and other saints. Inside Szent Rozália-kápolna, you’ll find beautiful works of art. Mattioni Eszter created the majolica works in the sanctuary in 1963. She also created the altarpiece and floor mosaic in the crypt. The chapel underwent a significant restoration in 2002 and now includes an urn cemetery. Szent Rozália-kápolna has evolved over time, a reflection of the ever-changing city. From plague chapel to cherished landmark, its presence offers a poignant reminder of faith, resilience, and the enduring power of hope amidst adversity.
