Was it courage or despair that fueled Salvador Allende’s last stand? Here at the Dr. Salvador Allende Stele in Dresden we remember a man who died for his beliefs. This stele stands as a tribute to Dr. Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens. He was Chile’s democratically elected socialist president. Allende tragically lost his life during the military coup of September 11, 1973.
This memorial isn’t just stone. It is a symbol of resistance. It reminds us of the importance of human rights. The Dr. Salvador Allende Stele was erected on November 4, 1974. That was just eight weeks after the square was renamed Salvador-Allende-Platz. Hans Modrow attended the dedication. He was then the First Secretary of the SED District Leadership Dresden. During the time of the GDR this place was a site for annual memorial events. The events continued until at least 1988. Exiled Chileans living in Dresden always participated. Pioneers from the 100th POS “Pablo Neruda” in Johannstadt also took part. Wreaths were laid here for victims of fascism. These wreaths also honored those at the Muenchner Platz memorial site.
In 1991 the city council decided to rename the square Muenchner Platz. The Dr. Salvador Allende Stele however remains. It stands on the south side of the square. It serves as a reminder of a tumultuous time.
