Ever imagine a wombat as a furry, four-legged shadow? At Maru Koala & Animal Park, such sights were once commonplace. This family-run park, nestled near Westernport Bay, has been enchanting visitors since 1983. Maru Koala & Animal Park isn’t just a zoo. It’s a testament to the vision of Ruth and George Heffer. They started with Maru Craft, a small shop on their Grantville property. As their craft business grew, so did their love for animals. George, with his wombat companion constantly at his heels, and Charlie the cockatoo perched on his shoulder, helped transform the property. Maru Koala & Animal Park became a haven where visitors could connect with Australian wildlife. The Heffers’ son, Ian, recognized the park’s potential. He took over in 1990, expanding the park and adding Pirate Pete’s Mini-golf. Tragedy struck in 2009 when a fire destroyed the original buildings. But, like a phoenix from the ashes, Maru Koala & Animal Park rose again in 2011 with a brand-new, modern facility. Today, Maru Koala & Animal Park continues to thrive, winning awards and accolades. It remains a place where you can hand-feed kangaroos, get close to koalas, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of Charlie the cockatoo, a living link to the park’s humble beginnings.
