Gazing up, one can’t help but be struck by the Palacio Barolo’s imposing presence. It stands as a testament to architectural ambition. This landmark office building is located on Avenida de Mayo. It is a true Buenos Aires icon.

The Palacio Barolo’s story begins with Luis Barolo. He was an Italian immigrant. He made a fortune in knitted fabrics. Barolo commissioned Italian architect Mario Palanti to design this masterpiece. Palanti also designed Palacio Salvo in Montevideo.

Completed in 1923, the Palacio Barolo was South America’s tallest building. It held that title until 1935. The Kavanagh Building then surpassed it. Today, the Palacio Barolo houses offices and businesses. It also stands as a monument to art and culture.

Palanti designed the Palacio Barolo with Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy in mind. The building’s structure reflects the epic poem’s cosmology. There are 22 floors that mirror the 22 stanzas of Dante’s work. The building is 100 meters tall, one meter for each canto.

The Palacio Barolo divides into three sections. The basement and ground floor represent Hell. Floors 1 to 14 signify Purgatory. Floors 15 to 22 embody Heaven. This design makes the Palacio Barolo a physical representation of Dante’s journey.

Even the lighthouse atop the Palacio Barolo has significance. It symbolizes the nine choirs of angels. The lighthouse, along with the one on Palacio Salvo, was a welcome to visitors arriving by sea. It was similar to the Pillars of Hercules.

Inside the Palacio Barolo, the lobby has Latin inscriptions and monster statues. Nine vaulted archways radiate from the central dome. These represent the nine circles of Hell. Geometric figures representing alchemy adorn the first three floors. You will see the Italian flag’s colors. Masonic symbols are on the walls and floors.

Barolo intended the skyscraper to house Dante’s ashes. He feared Europe was nearing collapse. He wanted to protect Dante’s legacy far from the continent. The building’s foundations adhere to the golden ratio. This perfect number adds to its mystique.

Take a guided tour to fully appreciate the Palacio Barolo. Ascend to the lighthouse. Enjoy the view of Avenida de Mayo and the National Congress. The searchlight was once used to share news with Montevideo.

In 1923, it announced a boxing match result. Luis Angel Firpo fought Jack Dempsey in New York. The Palacio Barolo is more than a building. It is a journey through literature, architecture, and history. It connects Buenos Aires to both the heavens and the depths of imagination.

Declared a national historic monument in 1997, the Palacio Barolo stands as the world’s largest tribute to Dante Alighieri’s work.
