“A miniature parish church in America”? Right here in Elmwood Park? You might be surprised to learn that the grand Saint Celestine Church we see today had very humble beginnings. In 1929, during the throes of the Great Depression, Cardinal Mundelein envisioned a parish in this very spot. He entrusted this daunting task to Father Francis T. Shea, a gentle but determined priest. With unwavering faith, Father Shea and his parishioners started from scratch. Literally. They plowed fields, leveled ground, and even held Mass in parishioners’ basements and at the John Mills School. Finally, on September 26, 1930, Saint Celestine Parish was formally established. Their first church? A modest structure in the basement of a bungalow located at 3001 North 76th Court. This “miniature parish church” quickly became a beacon of hope during those challenging times. Over the years, Saint Celestine Church continued to expand, driven by the unwavering dedication of its parishioners and the visionary leadership of its pastors. A new school, a convent, and a larger church were built, each one a testament to their unwavering faith. In 1971, the current church building, a testament to modern architectural design and warm community feeling, was dedicated. Today, Saint Celestine Church stands as a symbol of resilience, growth, and unwavering faith. It’s a testament to the power of a community united by their beliefs, overcoming challenges, and building a legacy that continues to inspire.
