Ever wondered how a former holiday resort transformed into a beloved park? Pasir Ris Town Park is more than just greenery. It is a place steeped in history and community spirit.
Pasir Ris Town Park started as part of the Golden Palace Holiday Resort. This resort operated from 1967 to 1971. It featured chalets and a fishing pond. The pond was developed from a former sand quarry. The resort was not commercially successful. The government acquired the land in 1973. The Primary Production Department used it as an aquaculture station. They tested prawn and fish breeding. The Housing & Development Board then developed the Town Park.
Pasir Ris Park was developed in the late 1980s. It was intended to serve nearby residents. Initial plans included a large pond and cycling paths. Two Japanese landscape specialists assisted in the park’s design. Construction began in September 1984. The park opened in phases from August 1986 to 1991.
The Town Park’s fishing pond keeps the area’s heritage alive. Anglers and families gather here.
Pasir Ris Park covers 70 hectares. It is bordered by Pasir Ris Road and Jalan Loyang Besar. The park faces the sea. It is divided into four areas. These are numbered from east to west.
In 2007, the park expanded. This added a herb garden. A raised wooden walkway was built in the mangrove area. An open interpretive center was also added.
The park has barbecue pits. There are dining establishments too. Dedicated facilities are available for cycling and water sports. Selected areas are designated for camping. Gardens showcase culinary and flowering plants.
During construction, part of the mangrove was preserved. More was added later. The mangroves have raised wooden walkways. Signage provides information on wildlife. A three-story tower allows bird-watching.
Pasir Ris Park officially opened on August 23 1986. The first section was themed “Children’s Holiday”. It cost S$500000. It featured equipment for different age groups. In 1988, work began on the “Fair Weather Sunday” area. This included a lookout point and picnic facilities. It also featured a mangrove area with boardwalks. Phase 4 completed in November 1991. This provided an area for large gatherings.
Today, Pasir Ris Town Park blends recreation and history. It offers a unique experience for everyone.
