Imagine the murmur of anticipation hanging in the air. Right here stands the ASB Waterfront Theatre a beacon of Auckland’s vibrant arts scene. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the city’s commitment to culture and innovation.

The ASB Waterfront Theatre found its home in Wynyard Quarter Auckland’s innovation hub. This $36 million project marked a major milestone. It signified a new chapter in Auckland and New Zealand theatre history.

Inside the ASB Waterfront Theatre you’ll find a 668-seat theatre. A bar cafe gallery and event space add to its appeal. It is a purpose-built venue designed as the Auckland Theatre Company’s new home.

The ASB Waterfront Theatre’s story began when ASB moved to Wynyard Quarter. The bank wanted to support innovative business. They saw the potential of a theatre to enhance the waterfront’s appeal. Lester McGrath ATC General Manager noted that the waterfront’s dynamic nature made it ideal. It was a place to showcase Auckland’s theatre scene like never before.

Beyond performances the ASB Waterfront Theatre is home to public artworks. “Light Matrix” by Leo Villareal is one highlight. This installation uses 8400 LED lights to create a stunning display over Halsey Street. Villareal a renowned light artist created his first major Pacific commission here. Professor Robert Jahnke created “Pou Whakamaharatanga mo Maui tikitiki a Taranga”. This carved pou stands 6.4 meters tall. It is based on Maui narratives and serves as a focal point for ceremonies.

Inside the Villa Maria Gallery you can find works by New Zealand visual artists. A red spiral staircase adds theatrical flair to the building’s southern aspect. Gordon Moller lead architect described the vision. He imagined a timber crucible within a glass pavilion. It is a gift to Auckland where future stories can unfold for generations.

While the ASB Waterfront Theatre is ATC’s home it welcomes other arts groups. ATC performs here for 26 weeks each year. The remaining time is for performances and events by others.

ASB’s Chief Executive Barbara Chapman expressed pride in sponsoring the theatre. She noted that the partnership aligns with ASB’s commitment to supporting the arts in New Zealand. She emphasized that the theatre provides a world-class artistic hub in Wynyard Quarter.

Hon. Maggie Barry ONZM Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage praised the facility. She emphasized the ASB Waterfront Theatre’s role in celebrating and nurturing the arts. It provides a platform for diverse Auckland voices.

The ASB Waterfront Theatre also boasts impressive green credentials. It was designed with sustainability in mind. The building achieved a five-star Green Star rating. This makes it the first green-rated theatre in the Southern Hemisphere.

Innovation was key during construction. The column-free auditorium relies on massive prefabricated cross-beams and columns. The roof was assembled nearby and lifted into place during a street closure.

The ASB Waterfront Theatre reused piles from an old building. This reduced costs and aligned with sustainable practices. The auditorium’s construction was a challenge. The team created a rigidly braced box to ensure flexibility.

The ASB Waterfront Theatre’s sophisticated industrial design features polished concrete. Natural timber cladding and exposed services add to its appeal. Moller describes the auditorium as his cedar crucible.

So as you stand here take it all in. The ASB Waterfront Theatre is more than a building. It’s a vibrant hub for arts culture and community in the heart of Auckland.
