Hidden within the courtyard of the Dohany Street Synagogue stands the Steel Eating Tree, also known as the Tree of Life. This isn’t your typical tree. It’s a sculpted weeping willow made of metal, its leaves shimmering silver. Each delicate leaf bears a name, a stark reminder of the Hungarian Jews lost during the Holocaust. The Steel Eating Tree, or Holocaust Memorial Tree as it’s sometimes called, commemorates at least 400,000 lives tragically cut short by the Nazis and their Hungarian collaborators. Created by Imre Varga in 1991, this memorial stands as a powerful symbol of mourning and remembrance. The weeping willow form isn’t just symbolic of sorrow, some believe it also represents an upturned menorah, a symbol of Judaism. Before the Steel Eating Tree, you’ll see a tall, black pillar. Notice the two spaces within its form. These represent the Tablets of the Covenant, a sacred symbol in Jewish tradition. Look around the base of the tree. The scattered pebbles are placed there by visitors, each one a silent prayer, a personal tribute to the victims. The Steel Eating Tree is visible from the street, but to truly appreciate its power, enter the Dohany Street Synagogue and stand beneath its branches. Feel the weight of the names, the immensity of the loss, and the enduring strength of remembrance.
