Pura Luhur Pakendungan. A place where whispers of ancient legends intertwine with the rustling of sacred leaves. Pura Luhur Pakendungan stands proudly within the Tanah Lot area, a beacon of Balinese spirituality. It’s a Dang Kahyangan, a temple of the world, revered across the island. The very name, Pura Luhur Pakendungan, holds layers of meaning. Local folklore links it to “duwung,” a powerful keris named Ki Baru Gajah, gifted by the revered Dang Hyang Dwijendra. Another interpretation connects it to “peken,” evolving into “pakendungan,” a place of gathering, a spiritual marketplace of blessings. Yet another tale speaks of a holy journey, a dharmayatra. The priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, drawn by a radiant light emanating from the south sea, arrived at a lush forest, Alas Kendung. This sacred grove became the site of Pura Luhur Pakendungan. Constructed in 1408, Pura Luhur Pakendungan predates Dang Hyang Nirartha’s arrival in 1489. He, however, played a pivotal role, enriching the spiritual tapestry of the area with his teachings. He bestowed the magical keris, Ki Baru Gajah, upon the village leader, Bendesa Sakti. This keris, believed to ward off pests and diseases, is now a treasured relic at Puri Kediri. Every 210 days, on the holy day of Kuningan, the vibrant Ngerebeg tradition unfolds. The keris is paraded from Puri Kediri to Pura Luhur Pakendungan, an 11-kilometer pilgrimage of devotion and gratitude. Pura Luhur Pakendungan is not merely a temple. It’s a living testament to Bali’s rich spiritual heritage. It’s a place where the echoes of ancient rituals mingle with the prayers of present-day devotees, a sanctuary where the past and present converge in a harmonious dance of devotion.
