Did you ever hear of a church purchased from Baptists? Christ the King Knanaya Catholic Church in Dallas has a unique origin story. It began as a mission in 1996 under the Latin hierarchy. The Knanaya community, originally from Kerala, India, needed a spiritual home in Dallas. In 2010, a remarkable event occurred. The burgeoning mission, led by Fr. Jose Sauriamakil, purchased a church building from the Webb Chapel Baptist Church in Farmers Branch. This act symbolized not just a change of ownership, but also the growth and establishment of the Knanaya Catholic community in the area. Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath consecrated Christ the King Knanaya Catholic Church on July 26, 2010. He simultaneously elevated the mission to parish status. This signified the community’s official recognition within the St. Thomas Diocese of Chicago. The church serves about 400 Knanaya Catholic families across Dallas, Fort Worth, and northern Texas. Christ the King Knanaya Catholic Church also boasts a vibrant religious education program. It nurtures 272 students with the help of 40 dedicated staff members. The church continues to thrive. They celebrate their main feast, the Feast of Christ the King, every second weekend of October. They also celebrate Kallitta Thirunal on or near July 26th. Christ the King Knanaya Catholic Church stands as a testament to the perseverance and faith of the Knanaya community in Dallas.
