“Oh, Hosterwitz, oh peace.” That’s what Carl Maria von Weber wrote in his diary. He wrote it in May 1823. Now you stand before the Carl Maria von Weber Haus. It was once a simple winegrower’s house.
The Carl Maria von Weber Haus is the only home of the composer still standing. It is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Weber and his family lived here during the summer months. This was from 1818 to 1819 and again from 1822 to 1824. He rented it from Gottfried Felsner.
Weber regarded his time here as the happiest of his life. He loved taking walks in the nearby Keppgrund. Composers Louis Spohr and Johann Nepomuk Hummel visited him here. The soprano Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient also came to visit.
The Carl Maria von Weber Haus offers a glimpse into the composer’s world. A room on the upper floor served as Weber’s composing room. It is furnished in the fashion of his day. Here he composed parts of his operas Der Freischütz and Euryanthe. He also outlined his opera Oberon and Invitation to the Dance here.
The house itself was built around 1664. Weber and his wife discovered this vintner’s house while walking in 1818. He found peace and inspiration in this landscape. His famous opera Der Freischütz may have been inspired by walks in the Keppgrund.
The Carl Maria von Weber Museum opened to the public in 1957. This followed the death of Weber’s great-granddaughter Mathilde von Weber. She donated her estate. The building was renovated from 1973 to 1976. Since 1995, it has been a branch of the Dresden City Museum.
