Whispers of revival fill the air. This is Bethel Christian Church in Seattle. Right here on 24th Avenue South stands a place steeped in history. A place where faith blossomed in the early 1900s.
Bethel Christian Church didn’t begin here. Its roots trace back to 1914. It started as the Pine Street Pentecostal Mission. This humble mission held services in downtown Seattle. It moved a couple of times before finding a home. That home was a remodeled building on Third Avenue near Bell Street. In 1920 it became Bethel Temple.
The church thrived under the leadership of William Henry Offiler. Offiler was a young Englishman. He’d migrated to Canada then Spokane Washington. There he found Christ through the Salvation Army. He was a man of faith. He felt called to full-time ministry. He brought a powerful spirit of revival to Bethel Temple.
During the 1920s and 1930s hundreds found salvation at Bethel. Many experienced miraculous healings. Famous evangelists from across the country came to minister. W V Grant Sr was one. He was known for his healing ministry. People flocked to Bethel. Ambulances brought the sick and shut-ins from rest homes around Seattle. The atmosphere was electric. Many received healing. Not all did but many found hope.
Bethel Temple wasn’t just a local church. It had a global reach. In 1921 it sent its first missionaries. They went to the Netherlands East Indies now Indonesia. These were among the first Pentecostal missionaries to spread the gospel there. Bethel also established Bible schools. These schools trained missionaries and leaders for years to come. Missionaries spread across the world. They served in Japan China Holland Colombia and Mexico.
Bethel also established a summer camp at Mirror Lake. It started in 1936. The church had a radio ministry starting in 1925. It broadcast messages of faith and healing. This brought comfort to shut-ins around the globe. It even reached people as far away as New Zealand.
Bethel Temple played an active role in the community. It held open-air meetings in the city. It ministered in jails and hospitals. It supported other churches. It established a night Bible school. This trained future ministers and leaders. Many well-known ministers received their training at Bethel. Dick Benjamin founder of Abbott Loop Christian Center in Anchorage was one. Another was Ernest B Gentile founder of Christian Community Church in San Jose.
Bethel Temple’s history is rich. Its legacy of faith healing and missionary work continues. Although the original building is gone its impact remains. Bethel Christian Church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith and community. A lasting legacy of a church that spread the word of God far and wide.
