From the gentle slopes of Prior Velho, the Ribeira do Prior Velho begins its humble journey. Ribeira do Prior Velho is a small stream that plays a significant role in the landscape and history of Lisbon. This unassuming waterway, just 2.3 km long, flows from its source in Prior Velho to meet the Trancão River in Sacavém. Imagine the Ribeira do Prior Velho in its original state, flowing freely from its source at an altitude of 70 meters. Originally, it stretched over 4.4 km, carving its path eastward along the back of the Frielas coastline. Sadly, the modern landscape has significantly altered its course. Today, more than 70% of the Ribeira do Prior Velho’s drainage area is covered by urban development. This has led to frequent flooding in lower Sacavém. The expansion of Lisbon Airport further encroached upon the stream. This construction impacted the upper and middle sections of the Ribeira do Prior Velho. These interventions not only shortened the stream, but also reduced its response time to rainfall, exacerbating the flood risk. To mitigate the recurring floods, several interventions have been implemented. These include regularizing the open-air section of the stream. A retention basin was built in lower Sacavém in 2010. The underground channel was reconstructed, and a new pumping station was installed. Despite these challenges, the Ribeira do Prior Velho continues to flow, a testament to nature’s persistence amidst urban expansion.
