Who would guess that a sports complex now stands where a mighty fort once watched over Lyon? Here at the Stade de la Duchère and the Stéphane-Diagana Athletic Hall, we stand on the very ground where Fort de la Duchère, also known as Fort de Balmont, once commanded attention. This star-shaped fortress, built between 1844 and 1851, was part of Lyon’s first line of defense. Imagine the five bastions, a testament to military might, reaching towards the sky. Fort de la Duchère’s design echoed the renowned Vauban style of fortification, a nod to France’s military history. Its purpose was clear: to protect Lyon from any enemy attempting to infiltrate from Paris via the routes of Burgundy and Bourbonnais. A key defensive position against potential invaders, its presence symbolized strength and security. Sadly, this symbol of Lyon’s resilience met its end in the 1960s. Demolished to make way for the very sports facilities we see today, the fort faded into memory. However, Fort de la Duchère’s story didn’t end with its destruction. In 1944, during a dark chapter of French history, 39 French Resistance fighters were executed within its walls by the Vichy regime. This tragic event adds another layer of meaning to this place, transforming it from a site of military strategy into a poignant reminder of sacrifice and resistance. Although physically gone, the memory of Fort de la Duchère persists. It serves as a reminder of Lyon’s complex past, from military stronghold to a tragic site of execution, and finally, its transformation into a place of recreation.
