Was it fear, or was it icy resolve that Senior Deputy Jessica Hollis felt as her patrol car was swept away by the surging waters of Lake Austin? Today, the Jessica Hollis Memorial Plaque stands as a solemn reminder of her bravery. On a stormy September night in 2014, Deputy Hollis, a seven-year veteran of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, was on duty, checking low water crossings for safety during a period of intense rainfall. Near Fritz Hughes Park Road and Low Water Crossing Road, disaster struck. Her patrol car was caught in the torrent, dragged away by the unforgiving current. She managed to radio a distress call, her voice a testament to her courage in the face of danger. The Jessica Hollis Memorial Plaque marks the spot close to where it happened. Her car was found 15 agonizing minutes later, but Deputy Hollis was gone. Divers recovered her body from Lake Austin’s depths the same day, a tragic end for a woman dedicated to the safety of others. This plaque serves not only to remember her sacrifice, but also to remind us all of the inherent dangers faced by first responders. Deputy Hollis’ commitment to her duty, even in the face of her own mortality, embodies the true meaning of heroism.
