The Mayo Memorial Building stands as a landmark on the University of Minnesota campus. It’s a significant piece of Minneapolis history.

The building didn’t start as one structure. It evolved over decades. The Mayo Memorial Building’s story begins much earlier than 1951. In 1911 the first building on the current Academic Health Center opened. It was called Elliot Memorial Hospital. This marked the beginning of the University’s teaching hospital system. The building’s expansion continued throughout the years. Additions were made in 1924 1925 1928 and 1938.

The final addition the Mayo Memorial Auditorium itself opened in 1954. Architect Clarence H Johnston Jr designed it. He followed in his father’s footsteps. The elder Johnston also worked for the University. The building was originally planned to have twenty-two stories. The Korean War impacted its construction. Costs increased. State funding decreased. The auditorium ended up with fourteen floors.

The Mayo Memorial Auditorium played a key role in the University’s medical education. It housed teaching facilities libraries lecture halls and research spaces. The building itself is a symbol of progress in medical architecture. It reflects the changing needs of healthcare over time.

The auditorium’s design blends modern architecture with elements of the Italian Renaissance style. Its red brick facade and limestone foundation stand out. Inside its halls countless medical professionals have trained. Research has advanced. Patients have received care. The building continues to be a vibrant hub of the Academic Health Center. It’s not just a building it’s a legacy. It reflects the University’s commitment to medical education and research. It serves the community it’s a landmark. The Mayo Memorial Auditorium remains a significant part of Minneapolis.
