Stepping into the bustling heart of Budapest, you find yourself before the FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture. Don’t let the modern exhibitions fool you. This architectural gem has a rich history. The FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture first opened its doors on October 1st, 2009. It was founded by the Budapest Architecture Chamber. It quickly became a cultural hub. The center hosts 30 to 40 programs monthly. FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture emphasizes architecture’s vital role in culture. This core belief drives its diverse programming. While architecture takes center stage, the FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture also embraces other art forms. Fine arts, design, photography, music, theater, science, literature, and film all find a home here. The building itself has a fascinating past. Designed by Aladár Kármán and Gyula Ullmann in 1906, it originally served the retirement fund of the Hungarian General Bank. The ground and first floors housed the Hermes Hungarian General Exchange Commission, a bank subsidiary. The building underwent remodeling in 1913, led by architects Alfréd Hajós and János Villányi. Over the years, it housed the Builder’s Engineering Club, offices of the 31st National Constructing Company, and the OTP Bank’s Central Computing Office. By 1992, the building stood unoccupied. It remained so until its rebirth as the FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture. Today, FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture continues to showcase new exhibitions every three weeks. Its bookshop, named after architecture critic Mihály Vargha, offers a wide selection of books and journals. FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture stands as a testament to the enduring power of architecture and its connection to the wider world of art and culture.
