Unassuming from the outside, Schloss Lauben holds stories within its walls. Schloss Lauben isn’t a castle in the classic sense. It is more like a manor house. Its history began in the 17th century.

Imagine the land as a vineyard. The Eckhardt family owned it. They established a wine estate here. In 1781, Schenk’s Atlas Saxonicus novus showed the estate’s predecessor building. Around 1806, the estate changed. Vollbrechtshausen, a forester, became the new owner. He transformed the estate into Schloss Lauben. The owners changed several times after him.

Picture the mid-19th century. The property got its enclosure. The design incorporated popular castle architecture. Now, jump to 1883. This is when the name “Schloss Lauben” first appeared. Friedrich Alexander Hermann Mockmann bought the property. He initiated extensive renovations. A side wing was added. Schloss Lauben served different purposes over time. It was a vineyard. Then it was a forestry estate. Before 1945, it even became a boarding school for girls.

Schloss Lauben consists of more than just the main building. The complex includes the Berghaus and the Hohen Haus. These buildings add to the estate’s unique character.

After 1945, Schloss Lauben remained privately owned until the 1950s. In 1968, it was converted into apartments. This happened after the building suffered increasing neglect. Later, Schloss Lauben housed an external facility. The Parkhotel Weisser Hirsch Dresden used it as a training center. In 1984, Kombinat Robotron took over the property. However, planned expansions never occurred.

After years of vacancy, Schloss Lauben suffered again. Its structure deteriorated badly. But, in 2002 and 2003, things changed. Schloss Lauben underwent extensive renovations. It was converted back into residential space.

Today, Schloss Lauben serves as a residence. The property is not accessible to the public. However, its history remains alive. It connects to the past. It whispers stories of wine, forestry, and education. Schloss Lauben stands as a testament to time’s passage. It also reflects changing uses. It is a reminder that buildings can evolve. They adapt to different needs while retaining their charm. Schloss Lauben may not be grand. Yet, it holds a special place in Weinböhla’s history.
