What if I told you that Masjid Al Arif in Jakarta has stood for centuries? It has seen empires rise and fall. This mosque carries stories within its walls.

Masjid Al Arif is one of Jakarta’s oldest and most historic mosques. It is located in Pasar Senen. It is also known as Masjid Jagal. Its story began in the 17th century.

The mosque’s founder was Upu Daeng Arifuddin. He was a nobleman from the Gowa Sultanate in South Sulawesi. He aimed to spread Islamic teachings. It also served as a place of worship. Traders, migrants and locals all gathered here.

The name “Masjid Jagal Senen” came from its location. It was in an area for animal butchers in Pasar Senen. In 1969, its name changed to Masjid Raya Al-Arif Jagal Senen.

Masjid Al Arif covers 550 square meters. It stands on a 2,850 square meter plot. Its architecture blends Javanese, Dutch colonial and Middle Eastern styles. This mix reflects Jakarta’s diverse history.

In 1969, the mosque faced demolition. Governor Ali Sadikin wanted to expand Pasar Senen. But the demolition never happened. The reasons remain unclear.

Masjid Al Arif also survived Japanese occupation. Legend says a mystical event saved it. When officials photographed the mosque for demolition, a white-robed figure appeared. People believed it was Arifuddin himself.

Upu Daeng Arifuddin was not only a religious figure. He was also a freedom fighter. He resisted Dutch colonialism. He died in 1745. His tomb lies west of Masjid Raya Al-Arief Jagal Senen.

The mosque has undergone renovations. In the 1960s, a garment company donated 400 million Rupiah. This helped improve the structure.

Masjid Raya Al-Arif Jagal Senen has a rectangular layout. It features a layered pyramid-shaped roof. Four main pillars support the roof. These pillars are in the building’s center. Separate prayer areas exist for men and women. A fence surrounds the mosque.

The ablution area lies south of the mosque. It has separate sections for men and women. Toilets are also available. Rubber mats separate the ablution area from the mosque. This keeps the mosque clean.

Today, Masjid Al Arif stands as a symbol of faith. It represents resilience and historical richness. It is a testament to Jakarta’s cultural heritage. It reminds us of the people who shaped its past. Next time you are here take a moment to appreciate its enduring legacy.
