Upon this hill stands Jodoji Temple a place steeped in history. Its story begins long ago. Prince Shotoku is said to have founded it. A place of prayer existed here since the Heian period. Construction of the main hall began in 1306. Sadly a fire destroyed it in 1325. The community rebuilt it shortly after.
Jodoji Temple wasn’t just rebuilt. It was enhanced. The main hall hon-do now stands as a national treasure. It’s a masterpiece of Japanese architecture. It blends Heian period design with influences from China. This eclectic style is truly unique.
The temple’s treasure pagoda tahoto another national treasure is equally impressive. Built in 1328 it’s considered one of Japan’s three finest. Two-story pagodas like this were common in Esoteric Buddhist temples. Their existence adds a fascinating detail to the temple’s history.
But Jodoji Temple is more than just stunning architecture. It holds important cultural treasures. A 9th-century Eleven-faced Goddess of Mercy statue is among them. This statue is a testament to the temple’s enduring spiritual significance.
In 1336 Ashikaga Takauji visited Jodoji Temple. He donated 33 poems expressing gratitude for military success. This collection is still treasured here as an Important Cultural Property. Takauji designated Jodoji Temple as one for national pacification.
The temple also houses other Important Cultural Properties. These include paintings sculptures and written documents. These artifacts provide insights into the temple’s rich past. A Nirvana painting from 1274 is a particular highlight. It showcases the historical Buddha surrounded by mourners.
Jodoji Temple is even featured in a famous film. Yasujirō Ozu’s 1953 Tokyo Story includes scenes of the temple. The movie highlights the view from Jodoji Temple making it even more recognizable.
