Perhaps you’ve noticed the constant chatter of different languages around Karlsruhe. It is a city that embraces diversity. This is where the Sprachenzentrum comes into play.
The Sprachenzentrum, or SpZ for short, is a language center of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT. It offers language courses to students and university staff. These courses are outside of their regular studies. Let’s delve into what makes this place tick.
Since the summer semester of 2008, students at Karlsruhe University can attend one course per semester for free. This is thanks to the general student fees. The Sprachenzentrum aims to improve language skills. These skills help with careers, studying abroad like TOEFL tests, and communicating across cultures.
The Sprachenzentrum offers a wide array of languages. You can learn German, English, French, Spanish, and Italian here. But the list does not end here. Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Arabic, Swedish are also taught. If you are interested in Dutch, Polish, or Turkish, you can find courses for these languages too.
The main office, the secretariat, and the Spanish department are in Building 50.20 at Adenauerring 2. This building used to be the Franz-Lust-Kinderklinik. The English and French departments have their offices in Building 08.03. This is at Karl-Friedrich-Straße 17 near the market square.
Who can join these language courses at the Sprachenzentrum? Students and staff from KIT can join. Students and staff from other Karlsruhe universities are welcome too. Even those from EUCOR and EPICUR universities can participate.
The courses usually happen during the semester. They start in the second week of lectures. Keep an eye out for special courses during the semester break. The Sprachenzentrum uses two buildings. These are Building 08.03 near the market and Building 50.20 at the former children’s clinic.
To join a course, you generally need to sign up using an online form. If you are interested in an English course and haven’t taken one before, you will need to take a placement test first. This test is not needed for other languages.
Students of KIT and EUCOR and EPICUR universities can take one course per semester for free. This is paid for by quality assurance funds. If you want to take more courses, you will have to pay a fee. The Sprachenzentrum does not issue extra proof of your language skills. You can use your transcript to show which language courses you have taken.
The Sprachenzentrum also uses Teletandem. Teletandem is cooperative learning using the internet. You meet with a partner who speaks the language you want to learn. You both help each other to learn and improve your language skills.
