Have you heard of Gorne Wood? It’s tucked away in Brockley, a stone’s throw from the City of London. You might mistake it for just another patch of urban greenery, but Gorne Wood holds centuries of history. It’s a living link to the Great North Wood, a sprawling ancient forest that once dominated this landscape. This little three-acre wood survived, against all odds, through urban sprawl and the constant threat of development. Imagine, this patch of woodland was nearly lost to us forever. Back in the First World War, local Scouts patrolled the railway bridges, keeping a watchful eye on this vital infrastructure. After the war, the community, in a gesture of immense gratitude, leased this land. It became known as Dandy Fifth Park, a nod to those vigilant Scouts. They even built a Scout hut here, a hub for community activities. Over the decades, the land changed hands, eventually falling into the clutches of property developers. The Scout hut fell into disrepair. The woodland, once teeming with life, became a shadow of its former self. But Gorne Wood had a few secrets up its sleeve. It turns out that some of its trees, ancient oaks and field maples, had stood for over 400 years. This discovery ignited a spark in the community. They rallied together, determined to save this precious woodland. They fundraised tirelessly, eventually raising enough money to buy the land back. Today, Gorne Wood is being lovingly restored. It’s a testament to the power of community and a reminder that even in the heart of a bustling city, pockets of ancient history endure.
