Northcote Baptist Church

Can a church have two birthdays? Northcote Baptist Church can! This beautiful building, right here on High Street, officially opened its doors in December 1909. But the Northcote Baptist Church congregation actually held its first service years earlier, on July 8, 1905. They met at the Friendly Societies’ Hall in Wimble Street and later at Kimberley Hall. They finally established themselves as an official church on May 20, 1906. Imagine their excitement when this very building was finally completed in 1909, a testament to their perseverance and faith. The local paper described the Northcote Baptist Church as having a “solid and very presentable exterior” and a “bright and most pleasing interior”. It could hold 350 people and boasted excellent ventilation, a modern marvel at the time. The builders, Messrs J. Bennell and Son, a local firm, were even cheered during the opening ceremony. The opening was a grand affair. Reverend F.C. Spurr from the Collins Street Baptist Church delivered a captivating sermon. Reverend D.E. Harry and Reverend J.H. Goble also preached. The Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs. W. Hayes, and other town councillors and their wives graced the occasion. The ceremony even featured a musical performance. Mrs. Hoskins sang “In Verdure Clad,” accompanied by Mrs. Reid on the organ, followed by a solo from Mr. George Connor. The Northcote Baptist Church continued to thrive throughout the early 20th century. However, like many churches, it faced declining numbers in the latter half of the century. Then, in the early 1990s, a partnership with a Chinese fellowship revitalized the church. It now caters to both English and Chinese speaking congregations. The church employs three pastors: Robert Martin for the English-speaking congregation, Chan Ying Keung for the Chinese congregation, and Bob (Xiaokang Zheng) as the Associate Chinese Pastor. Today, Northcote Baptist Church stands as a diverse, multigenerational, and international community. It’s a living example of how faith, perseverance, and a touch of cross-cultural partnership can breathe new life into a community.
