Klippenstein castle

In 1289, a fortress stood where Klippenstein Castle now stands. It was first documented as “Castrum Radeberch.” Centuries later, Klippenstein Castle became a favored haunt of Elector Moritz of Saxony. He transformed the former fortress into a grand hunting lodge and administrative center between 1543 and 1546. Its prominent location on a wedge-shaped cliff earned it the name “Klippenstein,” meaning “cliff stone.” Klippenstein Castle frequently hosted members of the Saxon royal family. The castle’s architecture showcases the elegance of the Renaissance, preserved in numerous details. The poet August Friedrich Ernst Langbein had familial ties to Klippenstein Castle. His ancestors served as electoral bailiffs there during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Klippenstein Castle continued its role as an administrative center. It housed the local court until 1952. After the court’s relocation, the castle was transformed into a local history museum. The museum’s most captivating exhibit is Klippenstein Castle itself. Within the south wing lies the “Black Kitchen,” its name derived from the soot-stained ceiling. Adjacent to the kitchen is the Treasury. Both rooms display artifacts from the castle’s rich past. The adjoining rooms tell the story of Radeberg, from its founding to the mid-19th century. A 2015 exhibit showcases Radeberg’s industrial growth. Klippenstein Castle also hosts a permanent exhibition on Radeberg’s industrial history, titled “Industrial City of Radeberg.” This interactive exhibit features over 500 artifacts, images, and texts. It highlights Radeberg’s significance as an industrial hub from the mid-19th century to the present day. Today, Klippenstein Castle remains a vibrant cultural center in the Dresden region, offering a diverse array of events and special exhibitions.
