Longmead Reserve a place of peace and quiet. Imagine a time long before Auckland’s bustling city life. This very spot was part of a larger vision. A vision for regional parks.

In the 1960s a regional planning officer saw the rapid development of Auckland’s coast. He worried people would lose access to beaches. He tried to convince the Crown to buy land for a public reserve. The price was deemed too high at £10,000. Undeterred he envisioned other land becoming regional parks. Long Bay was among the beaches he hoped to protect. Local authorities lacked the resources.

The Auckland Regional Planning Authority supported his vision. A concerted effort led to the creation of a regional authority. Legislation was drafted empowering this authority to purchase and manage land for regional parks. The Auckland Regional Authority Act passed in 1963. This new authority inherited the Auckland Centennial Park Board.

The new Regional Parks Committee faced a challenge. Raising £1 million for land purchases. Negotiations were undertaken. Opposition arose from some who feared erosion. Yet the plan moved forward. Acquisitions included Wenderholm and Long Bay. Longmead Reserve itself likely benefited from this larger initiative. The land was protected and opened for public use. The public embraced the initiative. The programme gained strong support. More land was purchased for parks.

Longmead Reserve stands as a testament to that vision. It’s a slice of Auckland’s history. A space where Aucklanders can enjoy the outdoors. It’s a quiet reminder of the foresight that ensured this land remains a green space. It’s a place of tranquility amidst the urban sprawl. Enjoy the peace. Enjoy Longmead Reserve.
