“A grand house built on tragedy, can you believe it?” Clandon House stands before us, a grand Palladian mansion, now a shadow of its former glory. But don’t let its current state fool you. This house has seen centuries of English history, from its grand beginnings to its devastating end. Clandon House was built in the 1730s by Thomas Onslow, the 2nd Baron Onslow. He envisioned a house that reflected the architectural grandeur of the era. He hired Giacomo Leoni, a Venetian architect known for his Palladian style, to design his dream home.

The house Leoni designed was nothing short of spectacular, a masterpiece of the English Palladian style. It was a symbol of the Onslow family’s wealth and status. And for over two centuries, it served as their family seat. Inside, Clandon House was a treasure trove of art and history. It boasted a magnificent two-story Marble Hall, its walls adorned with intricate marble fireplaces by the acclaimed Flemish sculptor, Michael Rysbrack. Above, a breathtaking rococo plasterwork ceiling by Italian-Swiss artisans, Giuseppe Artari and Bagutti, completed the scene.

The house was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a stage for English history. During World War I, the Onslow family transformed their home into a sanctuary for wounded soldiers. Imagine the grand halls echoing with the whispers of recovering soldiers, their stories etched into the very fabric of the house.

Even after the war, Clandon House continued to play its part. During World War II, it sheltered priceless documents from the Public Record Office, protecting them from the relentless Blitz. In 1956, Clandon House and its gardens were entrusted to the care of the National Trust. The house continued to charm visitors. Its grand rooms, meticulously restored and filled with period furniture, offered a glimpse into a bygone era. People flocked from all over to experience its grandeur.

Tragically, in 2015, a fire ripped through the house, leaving it a shell of its former self. The damage was extensive, and the loss of so many irreplaceable artifacts was heartbreaking. Today, Clandon House stands as a poignant reminder of both the grandeur and the fragility of the past. The restoration efforts, though ambitious, aim to preserve its legacy.

As we stand here, gazing upon this great house, we can almost hear the echoes of laughter, footsteps on the grand staircase, and the whispers of stories past. Clandon House may be scarred, but its spirit remains, a testament to the enduring power of history.
