Ever wondered about the origin of such a dramatic name? Vérhalom. It means “Blood Hill” in Hungarian. Vérhalom is a district in Budapest’s second district. It sits on the southern slope of Ferenc Hill.

In 1847, Vérhalom got its name. Before that, it was called Franzisciberg. This renaming was part of a larger movement. It aimed to replace German place names with Hungarian ones.

Döbrentei Gábor proposed renaming 56 locations in 1844. He was a poet, royal councilor and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Döbrentei published a series of articles. These articles were titled “Re-Hungarianization in Pest”.

Some names reverted to pre-Turkish Hungarian forms. Others directly translated German names. Vérhalom emerged from legend. It is a less friendly sounding name.

Several unconfirmed legends surround Vérhalom. One story says Hédervári Kont István was buried here. He plotted unsuccessfully against King Sigismund. Another tale claims Hunyadi László was first buried here. This was before his body went to Gyulafehérvár. A third legend says Martinovics Ignác and other conspirators were buried here.

The boundaries of Vérhalom include several streets. These are Törökvész Road, Ferenchegyi Road and Pusztaszeri Road. Also Cimbalom Street, Vérhalom Square, Vérhalom Street, Alsó Törökvész Road, Bogár Street and Endrődi Sándor Street. Finally, Endrődi Sándor Lane and Gárdonyi Géza Street.

Only some of the new names became popular. Bátory Hill is now Hárs Hill. Virradó, Mátyáscsorgó and Nádorkút are forgotten. Csatárka, Csillebérc and Dobogó are still used. Also Farkasrét, Farkasvölgy, Gazdagrét and Kelen-bérc remain. Kelenföld, Kőérberek and Kurucles are still known. Kútvölgy, Madárhegy and Mártonhegy persist. Naphegy, Németvölgy and Nyék survive. Ördög-árok, Őrmező and Örsöd are still around. Pálvölgy, Pasarét and Péterhegy are in use. Petneházyrét, Rézmál and Sasad endure. Sas-hegy, Spanyolrét and Svábhegy are still recognized. Szemlőhegy, Szépvölgy and Törökvész live on. Vérhalom, Zugliget and Zöldmál also owe their names to Döbrentei.

Döbrentei’s work highlighted Hungarian naming. It showed the importance of reflecting the city’s life and history. Now, as you stand here in Vérhalom, remember its layered past. Consider the legends and the conscious effort to shape its identity.
